The One That Almost Got Away: A PlentyOfFish Love Story

Every single day, happy couples who met on PlentyOfFish share their love stories with us. These success stories are always music to our ears here at the PlentyOfFish office. The love story of Kelly and Jake, however, is a very special one.

Kelly and Jake, a happy couple from Vancouver, British Columbia, met on PlentyOfFish two years ago. They went through some unique twists and turns to get to where they are today – you’ll never believe what Jake did for Kelly! Below is their exclusive interview with us:

Kelly, please tell us the story of how you met and fell in love with Jake!

Jake and I met two years ago, the night after I celebrated my 27th birthday. He was persistently asking to meet me in person for awhile (via POF messages) but I kept avoiding meeting him – for no particular reason. Finally on this lazy Sunday I agreed to go out for a late dinner. We had great conversation throughout dinner, which is important to me, but I didn’t feel that initial spark that some people say they get right away.

What is funny to look back on, is that I remember going to my friend’s house after our date and saying “nope, I’m not into him! He has a tattoo on his hand.” However, after that first date, Jake continued to pursue me and we hung out a lot during the following months. We formed a very strong friendship and connection. I was still on the fence about dating him because he has a son, and I wasn’t sure I was ready to get involved in that kind of a relationship or play that role at that point.

Over the next year, we kept it quite casual due to me not really being ready for anything too serious. At the end of 2012, I decided I was going to live abroad in Australia, solo. This was something I had always wanted to do, and had planned on doing before meeting Jake. Jake seemed happy for me and even helped me plan my trip, but he admits to me now how sad he was to see me go.

In January of 2013, it was time to say goodbye. Jake and I hugged and cried, and we said “I love you” to each other for the first time. It was extremely hard leaving him. Perhaps, in the midst of being distracted planning and getting ready for Australia, I was blind to the amazing relationship and bond we had formed over the last year.

While I was in Australia we kept in touch almost daily, but during the first 3 months I was mostly into sightseeing, meeting new people and just doing my own thing. However, I definitely missed him a lot.

On March 12, 2013, I received a knock on the door of where I was living in Melbourne, Australia.  I was in the middle of having an afternoon nap. I peeked through the blinds and all I saw was cargo shorts (I should have know by that very fact) I opened the door, rubbing my eyes, and I couldn’t believe my eyes that JAKE was standing there.

kelly1Needless to say, I was in complete shock! Jake had flown from Vancouver, Canada to Melbourne, Australia, to surprise me and knock on my door. He told me that I am the love of his life and that he had to tell me in person! I laugh now because I still can’t believe men like him actually exist! Really? A man doing something like that is practically unheard of in our generation. What makes his grand gesture even more romantic, is that he was only able to get away from work for four nights, but he still came all the way to Australia! That’s a 24 hour flight each way, so he knew he’d only get to spend two days with me – but he still thought it was worth it!

There was a mutual understanding that Jake wouldn’t be staying. Living abroad in Australia was something I wanted to solo, for myself. However as time passed, and after the shock of his surprise visit wore off, I missed him more and more and realized that he is the one I want. No new opportunities in Australia could compete with what my heart wanted: Jake.

In July 2013, he flew me to Bali and we got to spend 10 days on vacation together. That trip was the tipping point for me; I knew I had to come home from Australia earlier than planned, to be with Jake. He booked me a flight back to Vancouver for September 2013, we moved in together, and the rest is history!

Jake, what made Kelly stand out initially on POF? What made her stand out when you met?

I thought she seemed like an honest down to earth woman, and she was super cute. When we met she was very bubbly and positive, and I am very attracted to that. She was very easy to relate to and talk to.

Kelly, what made Jake stand out initially on POF? What made him stand out when you met?

Jake kept messaging me on POF, pestering me to hang out, and when I finally did I loved our conversation. We had a lot in common. He seemed like a really solid, nice guy- with a great smile. Oh, and he was tall! I like really tall guys!

Jake, how and when did you know that Kelly was someone who you definitely wanted to pursue?

The closer it got to the time for Kelly to go to Australia, My feelings got stronger and stronger. When she was away in Australia, it really hit me that she was the one.

Kelly, how and when did you know that Jake was someone who you definitely wanted to pursue?

After Jake left Melbourne I started to have really strong feelings for him, and after Bali I knew he was the one I wanted to be with.

Today, Kelly and Jake are still happily living together in Vancouver, British Columbia. Jake owns a sign, print and graphic design company called Liquid Grafix. Kelly, a very talented furniture refinisher, realized she had a lot of DIY tips and now runs her very own lifestyle blog A Shabby To Chic Life. Kelly also works as a web designer and social media manager for Jake’s company, Liquid Grafix.

Love and Triplets: Taking a Closer Look at one of the many Plentyoffish Love Stories

Every single day, happy couples who met on Plentyoffish share their love stories with us.  One of  those very special success stories comes from Tracy and Jordon, a Canadian couple who met on Plentyoffish last year. Shortly after joining Plentyoffish, Tracy began messaging with Jordon. Both Tracy and Jordon were in similar situations, as they were both single parents with two children from previous relationships. Jordon is a soldier with the Canadian Army, and Tracy is a Personal Injury Paralegal. Both Tracy and Jordon had relocated to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and did not know many people in the Edmonton area – thus encouraging them to try out Plentyoffish.

Tracy and Jordon messaged each other for about a month before meeting. Once they met, they knew instantly that they had an amazing connection. They dated for a few months, and then Jordon proposed to Tracy! Shortly after becoming engaged, the happy couple learned that they were expecting. During Tracy’s ultrasound, she was shocked to learn that she was pregnant with TRIPLETS! Now, if you have been keeping count, they both had two kids each from previous relationships. Suddenly they were going to have seven kids!

The couple is currently planning a 2014 wedding. They were initially going to get married in September 2013, but upon learning of the triplets, they were forced to postpone the wedding due to the high risk nature of the pregnancy.

The triplets, Emily Rae-Anne, Madison Marie-Faith, and Aiden Oliver-Paul, were born February 3, 2014. Tracy and Jordon were thrilled that all 3 babies were healthy and beautiful. Below is their exclusive interview with us:

Tracy, what was it that caused Jordon to initially stand out among all the other POF users?

Jordon hit the “yes”button for wanting to meet me. I saw him on the list on my POF account. It was strange because I had quite a few guys messaging me quickly after joining. Some nice and some very weird.

I wasn’t necessarily looking to meet anyone right away. I didn’t happen upon that ‘meet me’ page until my second day having the POF account. We seemed to click instantly, though we did not meet for few weeks. I finally agreed to meet up with Jordon after he lost a bet on a Calgary Flames game and he owed me (the Flames fan) and iced capp.

Jordon, how did you know Tracy was the one, and when did you know?

In late May/early June, I was out of town in Wainwright for training for 2 months, and Tracy came to see me. It was a defining moment for our relationship that she was willing to come to Wainwright just to visit me. That was when I knew.

Tracy, how did you know Jordon was the one, and when did you know?

Jordon is from small town southern Alberta and I am from Calgary, but we were both living in the Edmonton area. He decided he wanted me to meet his family for Easter. Driving there (over a 6 hour drive) was such an incredible bonding experience for me with him. We talked about absolutely everything from religion to relationships and I realized he was the most amazing person I ever met. That was when I knew.

What was your reaction when you found out you were having triplets?

Interesting story. I had gone to emergency just out of an abundance of caution when I noticed a small change in the pregnancy. They decided to give me an ultrasound. I had texted Jordon to come to the hospital but he didn’t receive the message until hours after it was initially sent, due to cell phone reception issues in the building where he works, so he was not there for the actual ultrasound. During the procedure the tech kept saying things to me like, “are you on fertility drugs?” and things like that. Then she left the room. When she returned she was with the radiologist and I was thinking “uh-oh…this is bad news” when he began to run the ultrasound again. Then he said to me “I am not counting one baby. I am not counting two babies. I am counting THREE babies.” Then I burst out laughing.

I was taken back to the hall and was sitting on a gurney when the two doctors flanked me, and that is when Jordon found me. The doctors looked at me and said “do you want to tell him or should we?” so I told him the way that the radiologist told me. Jordon also laughed.

Part of the reason we had to laugh when we heard the news, was because I actually had an inkling that I was carrying multiples. However, at the medicentre, they only did a quick check on one side, found one heartbeat, and left it at that – not checking the other side! This caused Jordon to think I was crazy and say “See? They only found one heartbeat!”

What were some of the reactions from your loved ones when they found out about the triplets?

They were in shock and disbelief. Most of them were scared of what this would mean for us. They immediately stood behind us and have helped us so much through this transition. We would not be anywhere near as successful as we have been without their help.

Now that you have SEVEN kids between the two of you, what changes have taken place? New home? Change in career?

Since learning of the triplets, we have made huge changes. The biggest change was moving myself and my two children in with Jordon and his children. We are all living in a 3 bedroom PMQ on the military base located in Lancaster Park, Alberta. I was forced to go on disability fairly early on during my pregnancy, but my firm has been amazing with me, helping as much as they can. My departure from work resulted in a drastic decrease in the monthly income. I quickly became even more bargain savvy than I had ever been. I have begun couponing as much as possible and shop during the off season to seize as much savings as possible for us. This also ensures we have everything we need. We continue to reside in our 3 bedroom residence for the time being and it can be a bit crazy at times, but we manage incredibly well. We are a great team and that helps enormously. Jordon continues to serve with the Canadian Armed Forces, though we have been fortunate enough that he is able to take off when the children need appointments, etc.

How rare do you think it is, and how difficult do you think it is, to find someone special who you feel chemistry with – and share a special connection with?

We agree that a connection like we have made is incredibly rare. Finding someone that you have a major connection with and share a bond with is something that we have never felt to this degree until we met each other. We would have NEVER met each other were it not for POF. With that being said, perhaps the chances become more likely when you venture out of your comfort zone and join a website that is so readily accessible to so many people in so many different walks of life. It truly opens the doors to so many opportunities in love…though you have to be prepared to weed through a lot of potential suitors, we believe you can access so many more love opportunities by taking a chance. We are both glad we took that chance and joined PlentyOfFish.

How to PlentyOfFish-ify your Wedding Day

In September of 2009 Brandon and Chanel met on Plentyoffish. They quickly fell in love and 2 years later were engaged. As they started planning their wedding, they started thinking about how they could make their day unique while still sticking to a budget. As an ode to where they first met, they decided to incorporate PlentyOfFish into their big day. Here are Chanel and Brandon’s top 10 tips to PlentyOfFish-ify your wedding day on a budget:

1. Add embellishments to customize your look. Adding embellishments to your shoes, veil, fascinator, even bridesmaid dresses is an affordable way to add some sparkle and customize your pieces while keeping the budget in check. Chanel took a pair of sparkly blue heels and added even more sparkle by covering the area of the entire heel with silver sequins. Chanel also added creative embellishments to her and her bridesmaids’ fascinators, and the groomsmen’s boutonnieres and all of the corsages.

2. Get to know your paint brush and scissors. Incorporating the Plentyoffish theme into your invitations and Save the Dates is a great way to introduce the theme to your guests early on. When your guests know the theme before your wedding day, they’ll notice your incorporation much more easily. Chanel and Brandon spent countless hours after work and on the weekends hand-painting their own invitations and hand cutting their delicate fish shaped place cards.

3. Consider an uncomventional centerpiece. Centerpieces are what your guests will spend the most time looking at but can also be very expensive if you choose to incorporate flowers. What better way to grab their attention than to catch their eye with a live, moving, beautiful creature. This is also a very affordable way to integrate your theme and keep the kids at the wedding entertained during dinner.

4. Use your cake topper and wedding favors to show off your theme. Another highly visible piece of decor at your wedding is the cake. If you’re going to splurge on anything throughout your wedding in order to incorporate your theme, your cake topper is the place to do it. It is an opportunity to add detail, creativity while integrating the bride and groom and how they met.

5. Browse sites for inspiration. When you first start planning your wedding, it’s difficult to know where to start – how far should you take the theme? What are some affordable ways to incorporate the theme? How do we make incorporate the theme in a seamless and tasteful way? Browsing sites likes Pinterest, Etsy and the Knot will give you creative ideas for ways you can incorporate the plenty of fish theme (without going overboard) into your own wedding. Valentine’s Day: The PlentyOfFish WAY

This week was a whirlwind triple threat for PlentyOfFish.  Valentine’s Day, one of the biggest and most celebrated days in the online dating industry was upon us, which also happened to coincide with the PlentyOfFish anniversary exploding onto the scene 10 years ago. Most poignantly though, this week we announced the winners of PlentyOfFish’s $100,000 Wedding Contest: Andrea Ellis and Dave Mazur.

The Edmonton couple connected on PlentyOfFish in June 2011, and after some marathon phone conversations and getting to know each other, decided it was time to meet. 9 months later, they were engaged.  Its millions of love stories like Andrea and David’s that help put what we do here at PlentyOfFish in perspective.  They’re not a set of numbers or statistics; they’re a tangible reminder of the humanity that is at the core of this industry.

As the entire office exploded with a surprise “CONGRATULATIONS!” for the unsuspecting couple, the emotion of the moment was written across the faces of everyone in the room.  This contest was meant to remind our users that love is out there, to take chances, and to be hopeful – but in the end it was our users that ended up reminding us of a thing or two as well.

Cheers to Andrea and David, and to PlentyOfFish continually finding new ways to help bring people together, and  pursue and celebrate love!
