In today’s digital landscape, one term that has become a significant part of the dating lexicon is ‘sexting.’ According to new research conducted by Plenty of Fish, sexting is a form of connection that singles are eager to explore. In fact, 91% of singles are interested in exploring healthy and fun ways to express themselves sexually and 48% of singles think sexting is an important part of having a sexual and romantic partnership*.

To continue to encourage singles to date better, Plenty of Fish has coined a new term that is important to understand – ‘consexting,’ a way to discuss boundaries and receive consent before sexting.

To better understand sexting and its role in dating today, it’s important to know what it is in the first place. Sexting is defined as any digital communication with a sexual undertone, varying from playful and flirtatious texts, to open conversations about sexual preferences, to photos. Sexting can also be a virtual bridge to express and explore your sexual self once you’re comfortable, especially when face-to-face interactions may not be possible.

With that in mind, let’s explore how to effectively harness sexting in a healthy and respectful way to communicate, create deeper connections, and make dating a little bit more spicy.

Fueling Desire:

  1. 60% of singles agree that sexting can heighten the anticipation of seeing someone*.  Sexting can be an excellent tool for building anticipation, which is the heart of desire. It paves the way for expressing and exploring fantasies, and can add a thrilling edge to your dating experience.

Facilitating Open Conversations:

  1. Sexting can foster open and candid conversations about sex. It can offer a platform for people to comfortably share their preferences and boundaries, thereby promoting a culture of respect and consent in romantic engagements. It can help set the tone for communicating about these things moving forward.

Boosting Self-Esteem:

  1. Whether it’s through enticing messages or flattering selfies, sexting can have a positive impact on self-esteem. 82% of single women say sexting can make them feel more confident and sexy*. It encourages self-appreciation and confidence. Try getting creative with your camera and taking some artsy photos or channel your favorite romance author and flex your steamy novel writing capabilities to get started.

Extending Desire Beyond Physical Proximity:

  1. The beauty of sexting lies in its ability to extend desire and arousal beyond the bedroom. It enables individuals to experience excitement and passion at any time and place, thereby maintaining a sizzling connection throughout the day (and night ;-).

Discovering New Experiences:

  1. Sexting is a gateway to exploring fresh experiences and desires in a virtual space, without the pressure of actual physical interactions. It promotes creativity and exploration, adding an exciting layer to romantic communication.

Promoting Emotional Connection:

  1. For many, sexting can even serve as a love language, enabling them to foster a sense of closeness and intimacy, even when physically apart.

While sexting offers a host of benefits, it’s crucial to remember the central role of ‘consexting’ in this context. Open and respectful discussions about sexting preferences and boundaries are key to ensuring a healthy, fun, and respectful dating experience. So before diving into this exciting realm of digital dating, take time to establish clear lines of consent with your partner.

Embrace the power of consexting, and let your words weave a thrilling narrative of desire, respect, and mutual satisfaction.
