ICYMI – we’re still rolling with our #PlentyofPets month. Pets, like kids, are a huge factor in our dating lives because, well, if you can’t get with a date’s pet… you probably can’t get with them either.
If you’re a pet-lover like us, you know how absolutely soul-crushing it is when someone’s pet doesn’t immediately love you unconditionally. You want the clout that comes with being “in” with your date’s pet, and you don’t want your date to worry about you and their pet vibing. It might sound dramatic, but it’s a big deal!
Luckily, we have some expert tips to share from someone with a few pets of their own… Cat Rapper Moshow. Yeah, you hear that right. Moshow is an entertainer and rapper who raps about, you guessed it, his five cats. Since he’s built his whole career around his feline friends, we figured he could give us some solid advice on how to win over a date’s pet.
1. Don’t underestimate the power of bonding over food!
We all know how food-motivated our pets can be. Get on your date’s pet’s good side by offering up some treats — your date’s furry friend will love it, and you’ll also impress your date by showing that you care.
2. Give your date’s pet some space, at least at the beginning.
In any relationship, too much too soon can be a massive turn-off if you’re not on the same page. People need space and so do animals. There’s no need to come in hot and heavy, just give them some time to get used to you and they’ll (hopefully) warm up to you in no time.
3. Playtime isn’t just for puppies.
Most pets love a good game no matter their age. By playing with your date’s pet, you can create a fun and easy-going atmosphere that’s bound to ease any lingering tension or “getting to know you” anxiety.
4. Let your date’s pet smell you first.
When someone new comes around, pets are often protective of their owner and living space, so be sure to let your date’s pet give you a whiff before you get too familiar. This will also help them remember you for next time too!
5. Treat their pet with the same kindness as you treat them!
Humans and animals really aren’t all that different when it comes to trusting new people. It often takes time to win over a pet (or a date) and gain their approval. Impatience is never a good look, so take it slow and lead with kindness — they’ll come around eventually.
