Christmas? New Years? Halloween? What holiday could it be…
OMG Halloween is just a week away and I’m still wondering how the month of October crept up so fast! Who else feels this way? We must face it though and come to terms with the fact that a) we don’t have a costume and b) we don’t have Halloween plans…oh the tragedy!
It’s upon us, the most stressful time of the year. Since November 1st of last year – if you’re an adult human who enjoys happiness – you’ve undoubtedly been dreaming of October 31st of the following year, where you and your partner will don the perfect Halloween costume.
Whatever the plan may be for the evening, your main concern is to look fresh. But, like every year since realizing this special night is an epic opportunity for you and your SO to (a) look sexy and/or cool (b) scare the pants off your peers (and passersby) or (c) show off your mutually wicked sense of humour, Halloween has blindsided you. You’d think we’d see it coming, but every year appears to be the same deal – it’s mid-October and you’re left dumbfounded in yet another Minnie and Mickey Mouse couple set.
With Halloween fast approaching, it’s time to put your date night plans to action. If you want something more than trick or treating or traditional costume parties, then scroll on for eight next-level spooktacular date-night ideas.
If you’re wondering what costume will score you a date this Halloween, we have all the answers for you!
PlentyOfFish recently surveyed over 500 single users over the age of 21 in the United States, to uncover the top male and female costumes considered the most attractive by the opposite sex.
Here is what we found:
Batman is the sexiest costume according to single women!
It’s no surprise that a lot of men are dressing as The Joker (28%), but listen up guys; when we asked single ladies ‘what male costume is most attractive’ a whopping 26% of females chose Batman, beating out The Joker, who only received 14%.
The top three hottest costumes for men:
- Batman 26%
- Netflix and Chill 16%
- Jon Snow from Game Of Thrones 14%
We strongly suggest all single men steer clear of The Donald Costume and dress up as ANYTHING ELSE. Even the fictional anime character, Pikachu, was considered hotter than Trump! See for yourself below.
What costume would you be most attracted to at a Halloween party (Female Response):
Wonder Woman will capture the hearts of single men!
Most of you are on the right track, with 38% of single women dressing as the super hero. Well ladies, you will be happy to find out this costume is also considered the hottest by 33% of single men, beating out the popular member of Suicide Squad – Harley Quinn.
Top female costumes men will get googly eyes over:
- Wonder Woman – 34%
- Harley Quinn – 30%
- Netflix and Chill – 11%
We highly recommend saving your best Hillary Clinton impersonation for another time, as only 1% of males are attracted to this presidential costume.
What costume would you be most attracted to at a Halloween party (Male Response):
Now we want to ask you! What will you dress up as for Halloween?!
With Halloween fast approaching, many singles are still scrambling to score a date and last minute costume inspiration. As a resident dating expert at PlentyOfFish, I have the scoop on the spooktacular tips and tricks that are necessary for all singles before this year’s anticipated fright night!
Horror Movie Marathon
Get into the mood with a horror movie marathon! Fortunately this year, Halloween falls on a Saturday, which means you can actually check this one off your list! Not sure what to watch? The movie Halloween has been produced 10 times, so invite a couple friends and pass around the candy corn! Watch the evolution of Mike Myers starting from 1978 to his final resurrection in 2009.
Creative costumes are a conversation starter!
Don’t settle on the “sexy” cop costume that is guaranteed to make an appearance at least 8 times at the party. This is the perfect opportunity for you to standout! Rather than boosting up the ladies with a push up, try to be original, funny or creative! A costume that doesn’t expose your assets, highlights your confidence and will inevitably spark up conversation. Even if no one knows who you are dressed as, it gives them all the more reason to approach you and ask.
Get out there or don’t…
Halloween is the one holiday that caters to all ages! If you are looking to hit the town, you are in for a treat! Almost every club or pub will have live music, dj or dress up contest. Pub crawls are the best option for singles because the opportunity to meet a much larger pool of people is possible. If the first bar doesn’t deliver, move onto the next! “Halloween is a great excuse for a night out or to host a party of your own!” states our very own PlentyOfFish user. For the quieter type, there is no harm in staying in and handing out candy to trick or treaters, because you may just open your door to a hot “single” mom or dad that you can playfully flirt with.
Say hello to the man/woman behind the mask
Don’t be turned off by those hiding behind a mask or bulky costume. A little mystery can be intriguing! Take the time to approach these people. This is a great way to get to know someone’s personality before anything else. Once you’ve broken the ice, the mask may come off and reveal a pleasant surprise.
Don’t drink the whole punch bowl
If you are looking to make a great first impression with a group of fellow singles, it is very important that you pace yourself when it comes to the witches brew! I recommend starting the evening off with a beer, cider or glass of wine. Try choosing a drink with a lower alcohol percentage and stick to it for through the course of the evening. Everyone is different in terms of how much they can consume before the tipping point, so make sure you know your own tolerance before saying yes to the hard bar. If someone offers to buy you drinks, which in many cases they will, make sure you keep track of what you are consuming and stick to the same alcohol you started the evening with. This will eliminate poor judgement and a nasty hangover the following morning.
Halloween is fast approaching and you’re ripping apart your closet to rustle up anything that can be converted into a somewhat recognizable costume. Your friends are doing couples costumes with their significant others and you are rolling to the party solo this year. Fret no more! As the resident dating expert at PlentyOfFish I can guide you to scoring the ultimate Halloween costume with this year’s best and worst costumes for singles.
Cecil the Lion
You may think this will spark up a conversation, it will, but not the right kind. This controversial topic is a sore spot for most people so it’s best to avoid it altogether. RIP Cecil!
Don’t hide behind the mask of Donald Trump. This costume is sure to make more than one appearance at the party and you don’t want to be one in a crowd.
There is a good reason for the name behind Dad bod. This costume is more likely to repel the ladies than draw them in.
Mad Max & Imperator Furiosa (from Mad Max)
This costume is my number one choice because it’s quick, easy and you can probably find most costume pieces in your own wardrobe. If you have an old sheet laying around, rip it up, make it dirty and you are well on your way to Fury Road.
I love this costume idea because it is clever and immediately tells everyone you are single and looking. Simply dress in black, and carry a bike wheel. You can stand next to a couple or photo bomb those group shots. People will be curious to know who the third wheel is.
Captain America & Wonder Woman
Any type of superhero can be a great costume for all singles. It is powerful, sexy and highlights the most appealing assets of the male and female body. In past surveys taken by our PlentyOfFish members, 35% of women stated the most attractive male costume is Captain America.
Looking to scare up a date or two this Halloween? Let the sparks fly with your favorite ghosts, goblins and ghouls, as POF’s resident Dating Coach Sarah Gooding shares some tricks and treats to help you find a hair-raising sweetie this Halloween night!
1. Choose a Costume that Plays to your Personal Interests
Halloween only creeps up on us once a year, so it’s completely acceptable for even the most conservative of people to dress on the sexier side. So go ahead – dress as crazy and outrageous as you dare! Rather than sticking to the typical sexy costumes, (ie. sexy police officer, sexy nurse) try your hand at a costume that plays to your personal interests. For instance if you love NFL football, dress up as a cheerleader from your favorite team. If you love race cars, try your best imitation of your favorite race car driver. If you love entertainment and current events, go as new mom Snooki clutching her new baby, a blue-wigged Katy Perry, or a happy dancing PSY from Gangnam Style. Playing to your personal interests will show off your humour and act as an easy conversation starter at the costume party.
Of course it’s easier than normal to break the ice on Halloween night, but why not make it a bit more fun by adding an interactive element! We recommend including aspects in your get-up that will make it easier to approach someone or get a conversation started – and that means less pressure on you, too! For instance, Kelly, a POF user from NYC went as a graffiti wall last Halloween. She wore all white, carried around a few markers, and asked others at the party to contribute their creativity to her blank canvas. This could be a fun, flirty way to exchange numbers with someone you’ve been chatting with. Another POF user named Samantha, dressed up as little red riding hood and handed out candies from her basket all night. “It was an easy way to approach someone and everyone loves an unexpected treat
3. Stay Away from Bulky Costumes or Too Much Makeup
Costumes that take up a lot of space (particularly those made from large cardboard appliance boxes), or require makeup from head to foot are difficult to maneuver in – especially if you’re at a crowded bar or house party. These costumes attract attention and can be a big hit at the beginning of the night, but by midnight your costume is usually on the floor, or haunting the personal space of anyone who happens to walk by. Other party goers will usually try to steer clear of costumes like these rather than attempt closeness.
With all of the wigs, makeup, and masks worn on Halloween night, it might be a little too easy to pass by people you can’t quite get a good look at. But beware – the unknown and mysterious are often the hidden gems! Don’t be shy to approach these people…you may just get a wicked surprise of your own when they reveal their true identity!
5. Go Easy on the Witch’s Brew
The 31st has the tendency to be a bit of a wild card, so it’s best not to add to its uncertainty by having too many drinks too early on. Besides, drinking too much makes it harder to meet people and make a good impression with someone new – try having a glass of water, or take a break and bob for apples in between drinks. Most importantly, the thought of our members making rotten decisions when it comes to a safe ride home gives us goosebumps, so make sure you have established a designated driver for your fright fest!
