Oof, what a year it’s been, huh? You didn’t think the first full year out of lockdowns would come without some highs and lows, did you? Well, we’re all just navigating life, and dating, as best as we can! And that’s definitely something to celebrate.
Speaking of celebrating, we’re closing in on the end of 2023! And you know what that means—a new list of dating trends to look out for.
From Canon-Bailing to Rizz-Colored Glasses, find out what made the list of top dating trends for 2024.
Rizz-Colored Glasses (rizz-kuh-lrd gla-suhz): When individuals are drawn into relationships with charismatic and charming people (those with “rizz”).
Use case: Oh girl, he charmed me all the way into a fifth date and I don’t even know anything about him, other than his first name. I forgot to take my Rizz-Colored Glasses off.
You’ve heard of putting on the Ritz, meet putting on the “rizz”. Obviously being charming is the goal for most daters. 52% of singles find it attractive and most end up falling for someone’s “rizz”. But when the Rizz-Colored Glasses come off and you realize they’re incapable of having a deeper connection, you can be left in a bit of a jarring situation. Remember, you deserve more than just “rizz”.
Canon-Bailing (kan-uhn bayl-ing): Cultivating your identity outside of a relationship.
Use case: So, I said f**k it, I need to focus on myself with zero attachments. Canon-Baiiiiiil!
Choosing to work on yourself to be a better version of you (for yourself and your future partner)? Not all heroes wear capes. Everyone needs and has a canon event or pivotal moment that changes their life and sets them on a better path. And what’s more heroic than prioritizing your own needs? In fact, 32% of singles know someone who has Canon-Bailed. Focusing on yourself and prioritizing your needs should always be trending. It’s definitely deserving of a standing ovation in our eyes.
VBD (Vision Board Dating) (vi-zhn bord day-ting): Adjusting your dating app location to somewhere you’re considering moving to.
Use case: Okay, you got me, I don’t live in your city—yet! I have plans to be there soon, but right now I’m just Vision Board Dating.
Manifesting your next move? You’re not alone! Singles are using dating apps to bring their VBD dreams to life. It’s hard not to fantasize about a beach date or romantic hike in another city and potentially making a permanent change. A solid 23% of singles have experienced someone editing their app location to a more desirable location. And hey, we get that this could be annoying on the receiving end. But as long as you’re upfront from the beginning, why not see what’s out there?
Thera-posing (ther-uh-poh-zing): Overusing or misusing therapy terms to describe certain behaviors.
Use case: You’re literally giving me Jonah Hill vibes with how you’re Thera-posing. You’re not a therapist—stop analyzing my behavior.
Therapy? Highly encouraged. Acting like a therapist on dates? Not so much. Setting clear boundaries and prioritizing open communication is an important skill in relationships. But singles aren’t so keen about their dates leveraging “therapy speak”; overusing or mislabeling clinical terms to describe certain behaviors. 33% of singles know someone who has Thera-Posed, with younger generations like Gen Z (42%) seeing this the most. Our advice? Leave the behavior analysis to the pros.
Premature Intimacy (PMI) (pree-muh-choor in-tuh-muh-see): Sharing too much too soon.
Use case: Dude, I’m not kidding, they told me all about their toxic relationship with their ex. Showed me pictures of them, shared text messages and told me how they got even. Definitely illegal and major PMI.
Sharing your thoughts and feelings is crucial when getting to know someone. But there is such a thing as too much too soon. PMI, a new take on TMI, is way too prevalent among daters; 65% experienced oversharing too early on. Part of the fun of getting to know someone is naturally bringing things up at a pace that works for both of you. A little mystery can be intriguing, so don’t reveal all of your cards right at the beginning.
Crypt-ick (kript-ik): Getting the “ick” or reconsidering your relationship because someone you’re dating revolves their life around a single topic.
Use case: There will not be a second date. All he could talk about was CrossFit and football. Felt the Crypt-ick from the jump.
Crypto bros, take note: nearly 33% of singles have reported experiencing the Crypt-ick. We all know and have heard about the specific topics that some people just can’t get away from. CrossFit, crypto, Bitcoin, sports… the list goes on! If you aren’t getting a reaction (an eye roll doesn’t count) or holding a conversation with someone about a single topic, maybe take a hint that it’s time to move on to the next. Humans are multi-faceted and you should show off all of your different and interesting attributes.
That’s all of our top dating trends to watch out for in 2024! Let us know if you experience any of them and don’t forget to share your dating stories in the comments.
