A Two-Part Plenty of Fish Member Guide to Dating Virtually

It isn’t a secret that COVID-19 has changed the way people do almost everything nowadays. But, this doesn’t mean that your dating life has to plummet with it. That’s why as a member of Plenty of Fish, I thought I’d share my own short two-part guide on how to successfully date virtually!

To “Virtually Date” is to responsibly practice social distancing while utilizing social platforms to mingle with eligible bachelors and bachelorettes. These platforms include dating sites like Plenty of Fish or video apps like Zoom and Houseparty.

Before you get ready to video chat as you match and mingle, you should start with the basics.

PART ONE: Do the basics

Step 1. Update your dating profile – Let’s be real with yourself. If you were what I call “the lazy type” to skip filling out the bio portion of your profile before, this is the time to get on it. Everyone knows you are self-isolating with not much to do. Plus, you lessen your chances of someone seeing your profile and wanting to get to know you.

Step 2. Seriously, take a better selfie – Photos are the first impression on dating apps. Lose the sunshades and refrain from having excess headspace. Let us see that fabulous face and amazing smile. Here are some of the best and worst profile photos to use.

Step 3. Actually have a conversation with the person you end up messaging. Aim to build a rapport before rushing to video chat. Refrain from sending the first or second message asking to video chat. Asking too soon can appear to be too impulsive.

Selfie Example: Lighting – check, looking at camera -check!

PART TWO: Prepare for your Video Date

Congratulations! The two of you have messaged, “vibed” and made it to exchanging information to virtually meet. Here’s how to prep and set the mood for your date:

Step 1. Make sure your room is clean. Your date wants to get a good look at you, not the underwear and sweatpants you may have left on top of the dresser after your fourth “Quarantini.”

Step 2. It’s understood that your virtual date isn’t a photoshoot, but lighting is so important. Look for a well-lit space. No one wants to be greeted by a dark shadow on a video chat call. It’s simply quite spooky. Situate yourself by a window with natural light or use that ring light you bought from Amazon and never used.

Step 3. Angle the camera at eye level. Simply put: Your date doesn’t want to see your nostrils. Assist in giving that in-person human connection by adjusting your camera so it looks like you’re looking eye to eye.

Step 4. Be the true you. If you are the type that would get gussied up for a date, then do it. If you are the laid-back type who is a minimalist on dates, that is okay too. Simply aim to show your personality. Put on a presentable shirt or blouse of choice and put your best face forward. The aim of the video call date is to get to know each other just as you would on an in-person date.

So relax, light a candle and pour a nice glass of wine. This is a great time to actually get to know someone for who they are through conversation. Seize the moment while you can. Then when it’s time to go back to the “normal” way of life, you’ll have a real, meaningful connection and a fabulous “IRL” date to look forward to.
