It looks like some singles aren’t watching the Sochi Winter Olympics for the love of sport! Here at PlentyOfFish we wanted to turn up the Olympic heat by surveying our users from across the US and Canada to identify the sexiest male and female athletes and the most and least attractive sports according to singles.
The survey also combined internal analytics to determine whether a mutual interest in sports plays a meaningful role in forming relationships. The survey showed that nearly 1 in 2 single men are watching the Olympics because the athletes are sexy, and roughly 1 in 3 single women admit to watching a sport purely for the sex appeal. More than a quarter of all singles admit to fantasizing about these athletes – so let the games begin! The Top 5 Sexiest athletes from the singles survey include:

A common interest for skiing increased a singles chance 3-fold of leaving the site with another person who loved the sport. From a sample size of 50,000 couples, an increase was identified in the following sports:

Everyone’s online dating, but who’s getting the most attention?
As we enter the busiest season for online dating, one of the ultimate questions on the minds of singles is: “Do I have a new message?” It turns out the answer to this question depends on a whole host of things, including your drinking habits, your income, and your religion.
The PlentyOfFish Research team processed the messaging data from over 81,000 user profiles and 1.8 million messages among the 25 to 35 age group to discover the leading indicators that will determine which singles are more or less likely to receive a message. What did they discover? Women are no longer interested in the bad boy who doesn’t want to settle down, and men are increasingly seeking out educated women who are financially independent. But to a large degree, male and female attractions still follow traditional gender roles; Women still place high importance on a man’s income and men still give precedence to a woman’s age and body size.
Here are the PlentyOfFish key findings from the study:
- Women between the ages of 25 and 26, receive 14.4% more messages. Women who are 33 years old receive the fewest number of messages
- Women who are Catholic receive 20% more messages
- Men who earn between $100,000 and $150,000/year receive 42% more messages
- Men who want children receive 23% more messages
- Those who ‘Prefer Not to Say’ if they want children receive 21% fewer messages, and those who “Don’t want children” receive 42% fewer messages
*compared to the average user on the site within the sample group
How was the PlentyOfFish study conducted?
Two of our leading PhD researchers analyzed over 1.8 million messages and 81,000 heterosexual users over a 7 day period. For the purposes of this post, they focused on US men and women between the ages of 25 and 35 years old. All users must have been members of the site for at least one week. The information in this post is not based on anyone’s opinion or theory. These findings are based on the messaging behaviour of tens of thousands of real American singles sending millions of messages on PlentyOfFish. Here are the study’s results in details:

We were feeling particularly nosy recently, so we asked our POF users what their plans were for the upcoming holiday weekend. Black Friday, the notoriously chaotic shopping day filled with flash sales and mob like crowds, falls on November 23rd this year – and only 44% of POF users are planning on shopping at all. Opting to save money for POF dates instead, we’re sure.
Out of those who do plan on doing some shopping, Wal-Mart and Best Buy come in as the most popular retail destinations, with a whopping 47% of the ladies planning on heading to Wal-Mart. And although 25% of total respondents are planning on perusing Best Buy for deals, its women who are more likely to shop for electronics over men this year. So what else are we buying? The majority of shoppers are on the hunt for clothes, but naturally 26% of women are still undecided as to what it is they are even looking for.
Despite current economic uncertainty, 30% of respondents are planning to spend $100-$500, with women opting to spend only slightly more freely than their male counterparts. Damage to the wallet is one thing, but how much is our time worth when it comes to getting what we’re looking for? Demonstrating admirable dedication, 23% of men surveyed are willing to wait for as long as it takes to purchase something they want – even overnight! Comparatively, only 19% of women were willing to do the same.
Could these male line dwellers be waiting it out through their Thanksgiving dinners? 16% of men are not even celebrating Thanksgiving this year – a percentage over 50% higher than women who are opting out. Of the POF users who are planning to indulge in some well-deserved turkey, 43% of women would wait over 6 months before bringing a date to Thanksgiving, compared to the 33% of men who would wait that long to bring someone home to mom and dad. Interestingly enough, almost 20% of respondents would never bring a date to Thanksgiving – saving face in the midst of rampant overeating? No judgement.
Fall is upon us here at the POF offices, and we can certainly feel a nip in the air – but add a little Halloween talk into the equation and we’re chilled to the bone!
We all know that October provides some of the best excuses to cozy up to someone special, so why not take your date to the local pumpkin patch, spend the day shopping for Halloween costumes, or really take it to the next level and explore a haunted house together!
On a spookier note, Season 3 of AMC’s zombie hit, “Walking Dead” premiered last night. The show devoured basic-cable ratings records, drawing an audience of more than 15.2 million viewers – so we know we’re not the only ones with zombies on the brain.
Naturally, we went ahead and compiled a list of our top ten zombie-loving cities in America: and it’s probably worth noting that out of all the cities where people listed “zombies” as an interest in their POF profile, people from Seattle and Tacoma were seven times(!) more likely to do so when compared to the rest of general population. Needless to say, the west coast is packing some major zombie heat on this list.
And in the case of a zombie apocalypse, don’t say POF didn’t give you a heads up!
POF’S TOP TEN ZOMBIE LOVING CITIES IN AMERICA:
- Seattle, Washington
- Tacoma, Washington
- Austin, Texas
- Portland, Oregon
- Denver, Colorado
- San Francisco, California
- Los Angeles, California
- Honolulu, Hawaii
- Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
- Boston, Massachusetts
As the world’s largest online dating site, we receive a great deal of feedback from our users about what happens when two people bring their online connections into the real world. Many of these instances now line the walls of the POF offices in the form of success stories, but that doesn’t make that first date any less nerve-wracking and filled with nervous anticipation.
When it comes down to it, dating can be challenging. Here at POF, we experience all of the same highs and lows you do when it comes to meeting new people and putting ourselves out there. So, on a sunny afternoon in July, the POF team came together to share our “must-have” date items that help us put our best foot forward.
Needless to say, the best “must-haves” for a first date come from within, but sometimes it doesn’t hurt to have a little something extra in your corner to give you a confidence boost when you need it most.
So maybe your next first date will spark an epic love story, or perhaps a whirlwind summer romance. You may find yourself experiencing something new and exciting, or maybe you will end up with a new friend. Regardless of the end result, here’s to enjoying yourself in the process. Here’s to making your next first date, your best first date!
“My music is my date must-have because it’s an international language that we all understand. And chances are, if she likes the same stuff that I do, we’re going to get along. Music provides a great common ground for conversation and can potentially be an excellent filter for those that I don’t want to date. ‘Oh, you like Justin Bieber?…Bye!’ I think one aspect of a great date is that you teach each other something new so even if it doesn’t work out, you gain something. By having a music-based date, you can potentially expand each other’s musical horizons.” – Ben Louie, Advertising Executive
|“My perfume is my date must-have because… it’s something intangible for a man to remember me by. I don’t spend hours getting ready for a date. I’d rather seem like I just followed my normal routine and polished it off with the best finishing touch in the world, my perfume. That and I trust the expert: Coco Chanel once said that a woman who wears no perfume has no future.” – Veronica Best, Senior Product Manager
|“My date must-have: A good cause! Not only can volunteering be a fun date activity, it also feels great and helps make the world a better place!” – Johnathan Skinner, Mobile Developer
|“My date must-have is cute flat shoes! (Just in case he is on the shorter side), and they are super comfortable too, so I’m prepared for anything!” – Sarah Gooding, Product Manager
|“Dark chocolate is my date must-have… If the date’s going well you’ve got a nice little treat to share. If it isn’t going to work out, well then you’ve got the chocolate all to yourself. It’s win/win!” – Steve Oldridge, Research Developer
|“My awesome multi-print dress is my date must-have because it’s comfortable; I can dress it up or dress it down depending on the activity for my date. It always gets plenty of compliments and it’s hard to not notice!” – Natasha Anderson, Customer Service Representative
|“When I’m out with my wife, I never know what’s going to happen. I try hard to take everything I need, my phone, mints, my keys, my sunglasses, clothing with lots of pockets so I can act like a giant purse when needed, but no matter what the wallet has to be there. It’s the weapon against the unpredictable, or what may happen that you didn’t plan for; the modern day equivalent of the sword and armour.” – Omar Sefian, Marketing Manager
|“My pup is my date must-have because he’s a very handsome ice breaker, and we come as a package deal!” – Sasha Snow, Customer Service Representative/ Quatchi, French Bulldog
|“My mind is my date must-have because… well, I’ll let you use yours to figure that out.” – Nick Raniga, Senior Quality Assurance Engineer
|“My Hawaiian Tropic “Shimmer Effect” body lotion is my date must-have because it gives my skin a beautiful glow while simultaneously making me smell like Hawaii for my date with its coconut, island-infused scent!” – Erica Gordon, Executive Assistant
|“Flowers are my date must-have because they’re romantic and pure, and are likely the oldest and most natural way of expressing love to a woman! Every time I think of offering someone flowers, I visualize a scene of a young boy giving a flower to a young girl.” – Alan Chow, Accountant
|“Sunglasses are my date must-have because:1. Men sometimes look really attractive and hot with sunglasses. ‘With my sunglasses on, I’m Jack Nicholson. Without them, I’m fat and 60.’-Jack Nicholson2. Generally, we don’t encourage people to wear sunglasses in their profile pictures on POF, but they really can be great for a date, and might help you to cover your nervousness by hiding your facial expressions. Better use your persuasive skills to get the meeting moved under sunlight, and say you have sensitive eyes!” – Sa Li – Research Developer
|“Listerine PocketPaks are my “must-have” because date food can be treacherous – and just one of these goes a long way! Carrying around a toothbrush to combat a cup of coffee is not practical, and casually chewing bubble gum with a straight face while my date asks what I’m looking for out of a relationship just wouldn’t seem polite.” – Shannon Smith, Advertising and PR Coordinator
Welcome to PlentyOfFish blog!
Ever since our CEO and fearless leader Markus Frind created Plentyoffish.com out of his apartment in 2001, the company has been at the forefront of the ever-evolving industry of online dating – but what does it mean to be here?
As POF continues to grow tremendously and diversifies its business, we find ourselves changing relentlessly, shifting our perspective, and trying new things. So we would like to keep you in the loop too. This blog will include our musings we feel are relevant, ranging from industry trends, user behaviour, and advice on dating and relationships, to things that make you go “hmmm”.
Essentially, we’d like to share what it’s really like to be a part of something so big, with a core that’s fundamentally very simple – bring people together. So while we are feeling especially nostalgic and remembering our roots, I’ve included some of the original screen-shots from POF’s younger years. But before you start smirking, let me stop you right there! The original layout on the far right enticed almost 5 million users to sign up to the site before it was upgraded and switched out…
So with that said, here’s to the future!
