Emojis: we love them, we use them daily to covey our feelings AND, we even made a move about them and their hometown of Textropolis (based on the film’s outstanding 8% score on Rotten Tomatoes, not so sure it’s a must-see.) But that’s beside the point, because today is World Emoji Day and we are celebrating all our most beloved emojis!
Let’s flip through the history books shall we and take a look at where the emoji started and why. According to Wired, the emoji lexicon first appeared on Japanese mobile phones in the late 90’s and were designed to ‘add emotional nuance to otherwise flat text.’ And boy do they add all the feels 😧 😱 😰 !
Remember when you use to put one of these : ) at the end of a sentence? We have come so far and should be proud. There are now over 2,000 emojis to choose from. According to Plenty of Fish, there were over 840 million emojis sent on the POF app in 2017 and 1.6 million sent per day by male users alone on the app! That is truly impressive.
Emojis are truly all the rage right now and a new set of faces and animals such as the lobster (how have we waited this long for the lobster emoji?!) has just been announced by Apple. These emojis are appealing to the masses and Plenty of Fish found that 35% of Gen Z use emojis often in typical text conversations, beating Millennial (23%), Gen X (14%) and Boomers (6%).
But what are the hottest emojis to use when sparking a conversation with a crush? We have the answers for you!
😉 – Wink Face (flirty!)
😘 – Blowing a Kiss Face (oh? taking this relationship to the next level)
😍 – Heart Eyes (omg, they love me!)
And what are the least sexy emojis you can send your crush?
🍆 – Eggplant (swing and a miss)
🍑 – Peach (bottom of the list)
🔥 – Fire (no spark here)
Now you know! Happy World Emoji Day everyone. Now tell us, what’s your favorite emoji?!
