Unwind and Relax: Steps to Creating the Perfect Date Night with Yourself

A date night with yourself…

Generally, I shave my legs when I have a date, before wearing a dress, or when I have a meeting (not sure why shaved legs makes me feel more confident in a meeting, but it’s true). Which means week…4…5…6… of isolation hasn’t given me a heck of a lot of incentive to shave my legs. As the owner of well kept, a women’s shaving company, I probably shouldn’t admit that, but things are weird these days and it’s the truth. So, in order to change that and focus on self-care and get out of the isolation doldrums, I decided to have a date night with myself. Here are some of my best tips for creating your very own date night just for you:

Give yourself something to look forward to

I decided what day of the week my date night would be on early in the week to give myself something to look forward to. Seems a little silly since my schedule is pretty blank, save a few Zoom calls, but having a night allocated as ‘date night’ did give me a little something extra to look forward to in the days leading up to it.

Choose your location

I live in 650 square feet so it’s hard to make it feel like I’m somewhere different, but it’s all about creating novelty on your date night – whether that be creating a nook in the living room, adding extra pillows to the bed, or formally setting the dinner table. For me, taking a bath is always my go-to for an extra luxurious evening in.

Set the mood

Seriously though – there’s ‘relaxing’ on the couch, doing the same old scroll through your phone, and then there is truly disconnecting and letting your brain slow down to relax and alleviate anxiety. I find that creating a romantic atmosphere in my date location makes it that much more exciting. For my date night, I set the mood by:

  • Turning down the lights – it seems romantic, but it’s also to let my eyes relax after starting at a screen all day long
  • Lighting my favourite candles
  • Bringing flowers into the bathroom (oh wow, my date ordered flowers ahead of time, how thoughtful!)
  • Mixing my favourite drink
  • Pouring well kept ROSE soaking salts into the tub – Himalayan salts relax the muscles, while eucalyptus assists in healing skin irritation, and the rosemary and peppermint cool and refresh the skin and muscles

Choose your activity

Whether you are having a date night reading, cooking, or trying a new activity, decide on what you are going to do ahead of time and plan to do it for a set number of hours. It’s so easy to get sidetracked, but when you normally go on a date you’re going to focus on it. So give yourself the kindness of focusing on your date night activity for a set amount of time, distractions aside.

Obviously, I choose to have a bath – for me this means reading a couple chapters of my book, and then exfoliating and shaving my legs.

Exfoliation is so important for sloughing off dead skin and helping to regenerate new skin cells. We have a biodegradable agave exfoliating cloth that soothes and softens skin. Exfoliation might be the most underappreciated self-care activity. My skin always feels tighter and fresher after a good exfoliation.

After exfoliating, I take the time to give my legs a proper shave – not a ‘speed shave’ leaving patches of hair – but a thorough and thoughtful shave. I use shave oil because it feels extra luxurious, but also because it moisturizes my legs and leaves them silky smooth after shaving. Obviously, I come from a biased opinion towards well kept’s razors, but I do know from customer feedback and product testing that it really is a superior shave with reduced irritation.

These legs might not be seen in public at the moment, but that doesn’t mean I can’t feel good about myself. This date night is all about taking time for yourself.

One of the most important things is to look after yourself during these times – feeling good physically and mentally. Isolation isn’t easy and we are so lucky to be able to stay connected,  whether it be through Zoom chats, FaceTime or dating apps like Plenty of Fish. It’s easy to spend time scrolling away, but being more intentional for an evening will help your brain and body relax.

And maybe now that your legs are shaved you can set up that virtual date you’ve been meaning to.
