Witnessing a real life PlentyOfFish first date!

The other day I was out at a restaurant with my lovely wife. Halfway through our delicious meal at the excellent  Hapa Izakaya (a great Vancouver Japanese Restaurant), another couple was being shown to their table, right next to us. From the beginning it was obvious that they were on a date. They didn’t seem to know each other, and some of that familiarity that you see between friends or couples was missing.

They were a very pleasant looking couple who were likely in their late-twenties. The gentleman was obviously handling his nerves better than the lady. She was speaking very loudly, had her arms crossed and leaned back in the booth, while he was leaning forward and talking in a normal voice. As the date progressed she began to relax. She uncrossed her arms and  seemed to be enjoying herself.

It was really interesting for me to watch the date progress. I saw two individuals go from complete strangers to people who actually started to get into their date. They discovered common interests, common acquaintances over drinks, and started to have a great time.

As my wife was leaving the table I heard them mention that they were happy to have met in person as you never know what’s going to happen when you meet someone on POF.

In Canada, everyone knows about POF, same as in the US, where we have a very good brand recognition. I meet people who have been on POF first dates, or have met their wife or husband on POF quite frequently.

As the marketing manager for POF, I would love to see the same kind of brand recognition and growth everywhere I go in a couple of years time, especially in the countries that we’re looking to grow in:

In Canada, the US, and the UK, wearing the POF t-shirt is enough to get approached by people asking you about it, wondering where you got it and telling you stories about their experiences on POF. Wearing the t-shirt when I was in France this summer didn’t have the same effect. I will be really excited when I can visit the countries above and see the same type of brand recognition we currently enjoy in our most established markets.

Witnessing that first date at Minami was a very exciting moment for me. I see the testimonials posted on the POF’s Success Stories page, with new ones coming every day, but these are not people I met or have seen before. In this case, I was actually able to see people on a live first date, see the evolution of the date and actually get really close to my work.
