The holidays can be some of the busiest weeknights and weekends of the entire year. Winter time dates are in high demand and in-between shopping, planning and attending parties it can be hard to muster up the energy for another night on the town. Some of the best date nights over the holidays can be found in your own home, and we are ready to help you create a new holiday tradition of your own. All it takes is a Netflix subscription and a special someone, and you are well on your way to a wonderfully relaxing, fun night in.
The holidays are all about making new memories while reminiscing about the old. For instance if you are in my family, each holiday season we gather to share a hearty laugh about the time my well-meaning-but-directionally-challenged father led us into the wild (read: tree farm) only to become very much lost in ‘old growth’ for over 4 hours. Special times, special times indeed! But whatever your memories or traditions are, the following films are sure to create some new holiday memories for you.
2013 Netflix Holiday Movie Guide
The Polar Express
Run Time: 1hr 39m | Available on Netflix US
“Seeing is believing, but sometimes the most real things in the world are the things we can’t see.” – The Conductor
Fans of the award winning book (of the same name) from Chris Van Allsburg will love to see how this magic story comes to life. It captures the spirit of the season in a way that will make you feel all kinds of warm fuzzies. This is the perfect holiday date night film for the young a heart.
PlentyOfFish recommends a mulled hot apple cider and warm blanket to accompany the watching of this one!
National Lampoons Christmas Vacation
Run Time: 1hr 37m | Available on Netflix US
“Can I refill your eggnog for you? Get you something to eat? Drive you out to the middle of nowhere and leave you for dead?” – Clark Griswold.
This one is near and dear to my heart and has become a staple of holiday film watching in my apartment. Clark, Ellen and the entire Griswold gang gather to celebrate a holiday much like my own family would. This is the perfect holiday date night film for anyone that grew up in the 80’s.
PlentyOfFish recommends you bust out your Holiday Wally World Crystal and egg-nog for this classic.
Jingle All The Way
Run Time: 1hr 29m | Available on Netflix US
“Who told you, you could eat my cookies?” – Howard Langston
A classic tale of Christmas consumerism and a tour de force of acting from Arnold Schwarzengger and Sinbad combine to make Jingle All the Way a true affair to remember. This silly Christmas flick will have you and your date reciting lines in your best Arnie impression. This is the perfect holiday date night film for some silly fun.
PlentyOfFish recommends you bake some cookies before hand and enjoy them with an Irish coffee for this one.
White Christmas
Run Time: 2hr | Available on Netflix US
“Vermont should be beautiful this time of the year, all that snow.” – Phil Davis
For lovers of classic films set during the height of musical theatre popularity, this classic from Irving Berlin does not disappoint. White Christmas is the follow up to Holiday Inn, another great Christmas film from Berlin, and stars Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. This one will have you falling in love with the glamor of era and magic of the season, guaranteed. This is the perfect holiday date night film for a night of wintery romance.
PlentyOfFish recommends you steep some some peppermint tea and cuddle up together to enjoy this film.
Becoming Santa
Run Time: 1hr 32m | Available on Netflix US
The holidays aren’t just about the classics, take ‘Becoming Santa’ for instance. This 2011 documentary offers a refreshing change of pace. The doc follows Jack Sanderson while he makes the transformation; taking on the persona, mannerisms and spirit of the man himself. This is the perfect holiday date night film to stimulate your inner intellectual.
PlentyOfFish recommends a glass of wine and a plate of your favourite cheese(s) for the screening of this documentary.
