3 Ways To Pull The Plug On a Bad Date

We’ve all experienced first dates that are less than stellar. Maybe the chemistry flew off the screen when you were chatting online, but just didn’t translate in person. Most of the time it’s possible to smile your way through these awkward encounters and call it quits early in the night without hurting any feelings…but sometimes, heavier artillery is required. A first date with someone who appeared at least 15 years younger in images on their profile, or neglected to tell you that they’re on parole, or is wearing Crocs, needs to end pronto. Here are our top ways to pull the plug on a bad date:

1.  Something Bad Happened? Have a good friend on standby in case you need a phone call or text to help orchestrate a faux emergency that needs your immediate attention. Without having to elaborate on fake details, urgently let your date know that you are needed elsewhere ASAP. Apologize profusely, summon the check, and catch the nearest cab to girl’s night.

2. Summon the Friend-Zone: Nothing kills the mood more than saying, “I think you and I have the potential to be great friends!” Imagine being friend-zoned in the first two minutes…It sends the message loud and clear that there is simply no romantic future in the cards for you as a couple. And hey, you may have found yourself a bad date, but maybe they will end up being a great friend!

3. The Set-Up: If everything else fails, you can always hook this bad date up with someone else. Just be perfectly honest. This way you won’t waste any more of each other’s time! Tell him/her that you don’t really feel a connection, but have a friend in mind that they would get along great with. Even if you don’t really have anyone in mind yet, it makes for an easier let down at the time.
