With Halloween quickly approaching later this week, most singles probably have some insight into what their Thursday night is shaping up to look like. Whether it be eating an entire box of fun-sized candy bars, watching Scream 2 for the eleventh time with your best friend, or dressing up as Kate Middleton, we hold no judgement. But what about when it comes to dressing sexy?
It’s no secret that recent Halloweens have women favoring sexy over scary (sometimes, both). The cultural shift has spurred controversy, conversations, and movements that advocate returning the holiday to children without adult participation, and taking back the pressure for women to dress provocatively. But according to our recent PlentyOfFish survey, men seem to appreciate a little spice on Halloween (In fact, 49% say they would not be bothered if their own girlfriends wore sexy costumes), so where exactly is this backlash against sexy costumes coming from?
YEP, WOMEN.
Despite 35% of our female respondents planning to wear a “sexy” costume of their own this year, 51% are claiming that other women dress too provocatively on Halloween.
So, what is the spectrum here… a sexy Richter Scale? A sexy zombie is OK if you’re rocking it, but not if your sister-in-law does? A sexy zombie is OK, but not if it’s too provocative? What does too provocative look like?
This is all too confusing for me, maybe we should all just go as characters from “Mean Girls”.
